The Brief

Mission is a landmark in the New Zealand wine industry, with an unparalleled depth of history, it is the matriarch of New Zealand wine.

Sartoria undertook the Mission Estate brand refresh to reinforce its position as a heritage brand as New Zealand’s oldest winery and to ensure the brand and packaging is relevant and appealing to their target audience. Amongst their wines, the Huchet range is the top tier and highly awarded – sitting amongst the world’s premium wines. Representing the ultimate expression of winemaking, Huchet is named in tribute to proudly honour Brother Cyprian Huchet, who was New Zealand’s pioneering winemaker in 1851.

Produced in very limited quantities and only in outstanding vintages, the Huchet packaging required an elegant design solution which honours the heritage and reflects the premium price point.

An elegant and minimalist approach to typography was required to ensure the embellishments and heritage stand proudly in a contemporary expression that will remain timeless for many years to come.

The Design Response

The Huchet namesake and the iconic ethereal Angel’s wings are the focal point on our label expression and catch the light in an ethereal way. The wings are a symbol of St Cyprian and the winemaker’s devotion in the making of these wines. The label required impeccable craftsmanship in every detail to embue classic timelessess and sophistication.

The colour palette is classically minimal and reflects the French origins of Brother Cyprian Huchet with Red, White and Blue.
The ‘Since 1851’ messaging boldy appears on the tin capsule and box – proudly reflecting the heritage of the winery.

Print finishes and embellshments feature sculpted 3d embossing on the angel wings, two foils (Pearlised foil and regal Gold), a premium textured uncoated label stock and gloss highbuild. Produced digitally by the Label & Litho team in Wellington, the job took two passes & an uncompromising attention to detail by their experienced team at the press.

The packaging result is a bold wine of heart and depth. Every sip a celebration of the life and legacy of a remarkable visionary and celebrating Mission’s proud heritage. The Huchet wine is accompanied with a bespoke foiled single bottle gift box – again boldly featuring the Angel wings in transparent foil – and a French-red sash proudly reiterating the brand heritage.

We were proud to win the hotly contested Best Luxury Package Design in this years 2023 Packwine Design Awards. The Judges commented “a total commitment to detail, style, and sensual satisfaction. The design is clean and elegant and highlights the brand with an attention to detail in the embossing and gold foil.”

Mission Winemaker, Paul Mooney says, “we are immensely proud of the continued achievements for Huchet, which not only applauds the dedication and expertise of our winemaking team, but the commitment and passion from our design team. Any award we receive reinforces Mission Estate Winery’s position as a leader in New Zealand’s wine industry, producing fine wine since 1851 and now award-wining design.”
