The brief
Pacific Media Network (PMN) is Aotearoa’s most prominent and impactful media organisation within the Pacific community. Home to 531pi and NiuFM, Pacific Media Network and its flagship radio stations have been in the homes of Pacific immigrants and communities for over 30 years – providing a vital connection to home nation news and culture.
With a rapidly growing population in Aotearoa and Pacific diaspora in Australia and the West Coast of the USA, we were challenged to build a new and meaningful relationship with a totally new generation and a geographically fragmented audience.
With two well known stations, copious amounts of social content and the ambition to build a new Pacific podcast platform, PMN needed a new multi channel-platform to shift the business into the future.
The Design Response
The website with Pacific culture at its core, is consciously designed to celebrate Pacific voices, culture, language and creativity. With an entirely new brand redesign and digital design system rollout, PMN was vibrantly brought to life with the colours of its 10 nation flags, woven seamlessly throughout the platform.
User experience within the site was expertly considered across news, articles, podcasts, live radio, film and newsletter subscription. Powered by a bespoke CMS backend, the content and editorial teams had complete control of the platform, with the ability to schedule, manage and approve content with ease.
Encompassing the launch is the new master brand, ‘PMN IS US’. A unifying idea born from the truth that every person in the organisation is a part of the cultures and communities they serve. This is brought to life through a comprehensive design system, featuring iconography derived from traditional neck garlands. It also features an extensive range of imagery from a vast network of photographers, uncovering the true essence of contemporary Pacific life.
