Fresh From The Field — Access and Choice Campaign and Website – By Gusto Design
For the month of March we are shining a special spotlight on Aotearoa women designers – from their work to their stories. Join us for our inaugural Women in Design DAY | Design & You event coming up on 22 Mar 2024.
Fresh from the Field is a weekly article series sharing the fresh and inspiring work of our Aotearoa Design Assembly community.
Providing crucial support to the ‘missing middle’, Gusto Design walk us through their recent work for Te Whatu Ora’s Access and Choice Campaign and website.

The Brief
Every month, tens of thousands of New Zealanders benefit from the Access and Choice programme. The programme offers free support to help people manage their mental and physical wellbeing, and is available in various locations, including Kaupapa Māori, Pacific, and youth settings, and in general practice (GP). Access and Choice addresses the historic gap in the mental health and addiction system. It provides crucial support to the ‘missing middle’ and helps people access wellbeing support without referral.
These services are operational throughout Aotearoa, and continue to grow. The programme is rapidly gaining momentum, which is why Te Whatu Ora turned to us to create a user-friendly and accessible website for people to find local support. Answering an urgent need in New Zealand, while clearly communicating important information for those seeking support with their wellbeing.
The Design Response
The Access and Choice website we designed features bright, colourful illustrations to create an inclusive and welcoming feeling for users. Presenting important information in a friendly and approachable way. The illustrations were carefully created to be inclusive, representing objects from various cultures that contribute to improved wellbeing. They also serve as visual markers for each section, helping users navigate the site with ease.
After the website went live, Te Whatu Ora needed our help to direct people to it. Working with their team, we created a suite of engaging digital and printed campaign collateral to drive people to this helpful resource. From eye-catching posters and brochures, to animated ads shared online via TV, Google and across social media platforms. These visual tools were designed to raise awareness and encourage people to visit the site for more information. The campaign inspires people to find support through the website and empowers them to act, to boost their wellbeing. You can also go to the website to read up on other positive experiences from those who have already accessed the services on offer, which helps create a sense of community.
After only a few months being live the website garnered over 100,000 unique visitors and the animated video ads reached over 3 million views. Our team feel very proud that our visual design in its own way can help give back to our community, so those in need can find essential support services faster and with ease. Removing some of the hurdles in an often emotionally complex and slow process. Thankfully the Access and Choice Team felt the same: ‘The Gusto team delivered a fantastic website and promotional material for our Access and Choice mental wellbeing programme. They produced beautiful work which was calming and engaging for whānau who were seeking wellbeing support.’
Our design supports Te Whatu Ora’s message, helping to reassure people that everyone experiences ups and downs, but with Access and Choice, you don’t have to go through it alone.
