Each summer DA profiles a selection of the top design graduates coming out of our tertiary institutions. We welcome these talented emerging professionals to our industry, learn about their passions, final projects, developing creative confidence and ambitions for the future.

Today we speak with Fiona Yoon, who recently graduated from the  Design programme at University of Auckland. You can find out more about Aotearoa NZ creative study options by visiting our design schools page.

Can you tell us a bit about yourself:

I am a student at the University of Auckland studying a conjoint between a Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Science, majoring in psychology. I am a product designer, innovator and project manager with a vision to fill in market gaps and create innovative transformation in societal and human-oriented challenges. I am passionate about utilising my product design skills to problem solve; aiming to ultimately take part in creating real change for our future. I see myself applying my psychology and design degrees in the user-focused design field in my career. Outside of design and university, I enjoy dancing (teaching, as well as learning) and travelling!

What did your graduating project focus on?

ARctive is an exercise therapy programme for New Zealand’s elders, utilising augmented reality and artificial intelligence to address well-being and depression holistically. A void existed in the current market for a tool that comprehensively tackles depression, considering the technological constraints of older individuals and prioritising health values like physical well-being that are often neglected. This approach subtly addresses depression, reducing stigma and providing a user-friendly avenue for elders who might be hesitant to seek help.

The augmented reality space serves as a mental and physical exercise tool. The exercises are structured in rounds, gradually increasing the difficulty of brain training and physical activity.

Arc encourages users to express their emotions, acknowledges their feelings and provides advice on steps to take.

Arc fosters community connections by guiding users to send ‘hearts’ to celebrate the accomplishments of each other.

ARctive highlights the mind-body connections and focuses on physical well-being that is often left unaddressed in mental health resources. Its goal is to enhance overall health and reduce the risk of depression.

Why did you choose to study at University of Auckland?

I chose the University of Auckland for its prestigious reputation and global alumni networks. In the competitive field of design, particularly abroad, where I ideally plan to live, a renowned university like the University of Auckland opened doors and pathways for my future career. The design programme at the university also stood out from others I have considered, it brought a key focus to utilising diverse types of design to solve problems rather than feeling trapped with limited options on which design pathway I would take from the beginning.

What did you enjoy most about your course, or what do you feel you can take away now that you’ve completed it?

I appreciated the comprehensive nature of the design programme, covering various skills like user interface design, product design, project management, graphic design, and service design. As someone who entered the degree unsure about my design direction, the degree guided me, shaping my interests in design topics and software. It also enabled me to recognise my strengths and weaknesses in a workplace context, providing valuable insights into areas for improvement and mastery.

Were there any exciting or unexpected discoveries to come out of your studies?

Initially drawn to product design for creating innovative, everyday-use products, I’ve discovered throughout my design degree that my strengths extend beyond product design. Project management and user experience design were areas where I have found my skills thriving and want to carry on in these domains in my future career. Through my graduate capstone project, ARctive, I recognised the significant impact of designs incorporating technology. As our world continually advances and technology evolves, I realised the importance of integrating emerging technologies into my future work and will continue to develop these skills.

What was your biggest challenge while studying and how did you overcome it?

Navigating various design tools and software in the design programme proved challenging, particularly since I entered university with a background in sketching/drawing. During my studies, I came across multiple software that I had never experienced, and the range of proficiency levels among students made it challenging to keep pace with the class. Yet, with support from peers, lecturers, and online resources, coupled with dedication and effective time management, I successfully overcame these challenges.

Was there someone (or something) that inspired you to pick Design as a career path?

Since school, my unwavering passion for drawing and conceptualising new designs, especially in products, has been constant. Positive feedback and encouragement from teachers and childhood successes like winning local arts and crafts awards steered me towards a career in creative fields such as design. The support and belief in my potential from friends, family, and teachers inspired my journey into the design field. I aspire to embark on a dynamic career that empowers me to effect tangible positive change in the world through innovative designs.

Which piece in your portfolio are you most proud of and why?

I am most proud of my graduate capstone project, ARctive. This endeavour compelled me to acquire new skills, delving into realms like augmented reality and artificial intelligence which I have never dealt with before. Despite opting for a challenging and unfamiliar topic—using emerging technologies to address depression—I deliberately chose this path due to my passion for mental health. I believe there is a gap in the market, and this has motivated me to push my boundaries and undertake this journey. Despite the challenges, I am very proud of the outcome, as it has significantly shaped the trajectory of my career. ARctive project fills me with pride, envisioning its substantial potential to manifest and bring about real-life change. With this project Winning first place at the Lexus Design Awards has not only brought gratitude but has also expanded my network significantly. I am eagerly anticipating the exciting directions this project might take me.

What’s next for you?

I have one more year remaining to finish my conjoint science degree at university. However, regarding design, my next steps involve securing internships and employment opportunities that align with my capstone design concept, allowing me to apply my research and ideas. Given my enthusiasm for the capstone project and the perceived utility of the design, I aim to present my idea to fellow designers and potential employers. My overarching ambition is to consistently generate innovative designs that address market needs, ultimately improving society’s needs and well-being.
