Project Name: Cantonese in Canton

Project blurb: My project is to promote Cantonese. The aim is to get people interested in Cantonese. There are 120 million Cantonese speakers. I don’t think that’s a small number, it’s just that the number of Cantonese speakers in Guangzhou has become smaller, so I think there will still be people in Guangzhou who are interested in Cantonese and want to learn it. Cantonese originated in Guangzhou (historically known as “Canton”) and Guangzhou cannot let Cantonese disappear. Cantonese is very different from Mandarin. There is “written Cantonese”. I think it is our language and culture. It is also part of Chinese culture.

Project Name: Odd stools

Project blurb:  Odd is an everyday and practical object that is built out of card, and is suitable for living or working with. I am interested in the shapes and form of the chair, as currently you can find so many diverse and creative designs in the market. There are odd looking ones, bright colourful ones, Sturdy, unpractical and so on. In my practice, I want to be playful and want to challenge our perception of a stool by creating a temple “cardboard”.

I have combined blue and white porcelain with opera, combining some classic opera programs with blue and white porcelain of different shapes, adding patterns and combining them into a new porcelain. It can let people know more about porcelain and opera. Know more about traditional Chinese culture.

Project: Why Cats Are Superior (WCAS)

Project blurb: WCAS (Why Cats are Superior) is a street fashion brand that incorporates witty and humorous graphics, memes, and photos of cats in the design process.   WCAS takes inspiration from street fashion brands and artists such as Stussy, Mark Gonzales (What It Isnt), Shepard Fairey and David Shrigley. Using the cat anatomy and culture study I’ve created my own stylistic approach when creating the graphics for my merch and for the brand in hopes that some people will think about getting a cat, buy some merch, or do both.

Project: Smell Visualization

Project blurb: Emotional responses to odour visualizations can vary from person to person, and because personal experiences and memories associated with odour greatly influence the viewer’s interpretation and response to the artwork, I hope to engage the viewer on multiple levels and invite them to explore their own olfactory city memories and draw people’s attention to the community of olfactory disorders. I hope to build up my urban memories of Auckland, and I can also access my memories of Auckland through this private memory archive during my days away from Auckland. The original idea for this project was based on my experience of temporarily losing my sense of smell during covid-19.

Student: Thai Thanh Bach

Project: Self branding

Project blurb: My work is about self-discovery and experience. I like to tell people the story of my daily life through my illustrations. Sometimes, it can be an event or a cultural myth, or simply what I learned. I am creating a brand for myself with the intention of sharing my experiences, culture, and self-discovery to others.
