Fresh From The Field — COVID-19 Health Hub – By RUSH

Fresh from the Field is a weekly article series sharing the fresh and inspiring work of our Design Assembly community.

Rush share with us their design response behind the digital tools developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Health for the Covid-19 Health Hub.

From transforming the ‘My COVID Record’ design system into a set of expanded UI elements and recognisable icons to ensuring same user experience across all language options, the team at Rush helped to develop extremely user friendly and valuable tools for people with COVID-19 and their households while enabling the Ministry of Health to seamlessly uphold their role of authority for current public health information.

The Brief:

As New Zealand approached its third year in the global COVID-19 pandemic, public health officials evolved their response to reflect ongoing research, vaccines, and new variants of the virus. Individuals started to play a new role in self-managing COVID-19 at home.

The Ministry of Health needed a digital tool to act as the single source of truth for people with COVID-19 and their households – one that would connect people to other digital services, and that could be instantly updated with new information as it came to hand.

RUSH were able to hit the ground running with this project, with our team experienced in designing and developing digital pandemic tools.

The Design Response:

We worked collaboratively with the Ministry of Health design team to create an experience for a variety of people. Core content is translated into different languages and able to be published in alternate formats. Character illustrations and greetings can also be changed out based on language selection. A UX design technique called mirroring was used to ensure people got the same user experience regardless of which language they choose.

One of the most functional tools is the household isolation tool that allows users to create an isolation timeline for their household.

There were a lot of rules and specific cases for building this calculator: a 3 week rule, 21 day rule, 90 day rule… The UX design aims to take all the hard work away from users and make it exceptionally simple and easy to use.

We turned the familiar ‘My COVID Record’ design system into a set of expanded UI elements and recognisable icons. The hierarchy of information was essential for taking people through this experience with ease, and we used colour and font weights to prioritise content. Our usability testing returned 100% successful completion rate, confirming that this tool is extremely user friendly, valuable and useful.

In the ever-changing world of COVID-19, these tools enable the Ministry of Health to seamlessly uphold their role of authority for current public health information.
