Fresh From The Field — Te Tiriti O Waitangi Ki Horomaka – By Vanishing Point Studio

4 years ago by

With Covid-19 cancelling many events around Te Tiriti throughout 2020 and 2021, Vanishing Point Studio worked with Te Rūnanga o Koukourarata to create an interactive part of history. Having just over over three weeks to complete the project, the goal was to create an interactive and engaging resource that could be used to educate about the history of the treaty.

The Brief:
While the Treaty of Waitangi was signed at the Bay of Islands in February 1840, it did not reach the South Island until May of that year. With Covid-19 cancelling many events marking Te Tiriti, Vanishing Point Studio worked with Te Rūnanga o Koukourarata to create an interactive history of part of that journey. We only had a little over three weeks to design build and launch. The goal was to create another resource that could be used to educated young rangatahi about the history of the treaty – to take it out of text books and into the digital realm.

The Design Response:
Using original historical resources and imagery Vanishing Point set about building an interactive story that would lead users through the history of the signing at Horomaka. We used bold colours and imagery with modest responsive animations to take users through the Herald’s journey with an easy scroll. We wanted to stay true to the original documents that were available so enhanced digital elements of the original treaty to use in the project and enlisted Hope McConnell to create illustrations of the Herald and the two chiefs that signed the treaty – all based off original sketches. Put together the project creates a seamless story of the signing at Horomaka. The result was an immersive project that can be built upon to create a more complete picture of the treaty in Te Waipounamu.
