Fresh from the Field — Neleman Wine by Onfire Design

This Fresh From The Field features Packaging design for Neleman Wine by Onfire Design. If you have new or recent work that you would like to share in Fresh from the Field email Louise for details.

The Brief:
Dutchman Derrick Neleman is a passionate winemaker. After studying to become a biodynamic farmer which led him to the vineyards of Spain, his love of wine blossomed, as well as the importance it has as a social binder, integral to special moments and indelible memories. With this drive, he set up his own vineyard in Valencia that pays special attention to nature. All his wines are organic, vegan-friendly and carbon neutral.

Under the Neleman Organic brand, Derrick and his team have created a range of wines to suit a range of tastes and price points. Working with various designers and independent artists his label designs are an eclectic mix of styles and stories. We were tasked by Derrick to relook at his entry-level wine. The previous design had equity but lacked an authentic story that would introduce the world of Neleman wine to the consumer.

The Response:
After discussions with Derrick, an obvious subject came to the surface, Bicycles. A cliché for a Dutchman, but the team also deliver bikes from the vineyard and their various bodegas around Europe by pedal power. What made this story even more compelling was a hilarious story from Derrick of falling off his bike the morning of our first conference call. We could not let that story go untold. While we retained the bold colour stripe of the previous design, a range of illustrations commissioned of Derrick riding his bike (in clogs of course), packed with his beautiful organic grapes ready for pressing. We also added a harvesting detail – due to the heat in Valencia the grapes are picked at night to help control the fermentation process which inspired the man-in-the-moon motif.
A simple story that embodies Derrick’s mantra of ‘doing the good things right, you make the world more beautiful’.
