Design Assembly is excited to bring you a morning of conversations dedicated to those who are self-employed, celebrating the alluring yet intricate art that is freelancing.

So get out of your pyjamas for once and join us for a community breakfast lead by Toby Morris (Freelance Illustrator & Designer), Annie McCulloch (Freelance Consultant at Portfolio Recruitment) and Bret Gower (Lawyer and New Law Specialist at Smith & Partners).

Over the morning we will discuss the challenges of self-employment that no one really prepares you for with opportunities to share your own experiences others also braving the freelance life. Send in your burning questions for any of our guests with your registration and they will answer them during the day.

With sweet treats kindly sponsored by Best Ugly Bagels and Kōkako.

Annie McCulloch — Freelance Consultant

Annie graduated from AUT in 2000 after completing their Advertising Diploma (the final year they ever ran that course!). After four years as a Marketing Assistant, Annie started consulting for Portfolio Recruitment  — you guessed right, as a freelancer. She then went on to have her OE and decided to continue supporting the freelance community full-time with Portfolio when she came back home. That was 10 years ago!

As a Freelance Consultant, Annie has developed long-term relationships with amazing people — clients and candidates alike, genuinely enjoying creating those connections. Being involved in the design industry from this position and for so long has afforded her interesting perspectives and insights, and she is ready to share them with you.

Toby Morris — Freelance Illustrator, Comic Artist and Designer

Toby Morris is an NZ-born cartoonist, illustrator and designer. These days you might know him as the writer and artist behind the non-fiction comic series for The Spinoff, his comic series ‘The Pencilsword’ for The Wireless, or his animated editorial cartoons for Radio New Zealand. His freelance commercial illustration includes work for brands like Allbirds, L&P, Edmonds and Nike.

Over the past 10 years, he has lived in Wellington, Melbourne, and Amsterdam — where he worked as an Art Director of global advertising agency Weiden+Kennedy. He is now based in Auckland and has published quite a few books in his time too.

Toby will be sharing his own creative journey from full-timing to self-employment, while being a father of two, and the things he has learned (and still learning) along the way.

Bret Gower — New Law Specialist (Tax and Intellectual Property)

Bret joined Smith & Partners in late 2017 following a successful career as a design agency owner he now specialises in New Law, Tax and Intellectual Property. His hybrid skillset spanning the legal and creative industries gives Bret insight into the legal priorities of clients balanced against the creative expectations of designers.

Bret will be will covering two broad IP topics: copyright and trademarks, and will be happy to answer any questions on either. This will be your chance to understand where you stand legally when it comes to clients and commissions.
