Fresh From The Field — Design 4 Conservation Mindset Cards – By Ana Yamila Palatnik
For the month of March we are shining a special spotlight on Aotearoa women designers – from their work to their stories. Join us for our inaugural Women in Design DAY | Design & You event coming up on 22 Mar 2024.
Fresh from the Field is a weekly article series sharing the fresh and inspiring work of our Aotearoa Design Assembly community.
Designed to spark engagement and catalyze a deeper connection with sustainability efforts, these D4C mindset cards ( an integral part of the Design for Conservation methodology workshops) balance the complexity of conservation with the simplicity of nature’s principles.

The brief
The task at hand was to develop a set of illustrations for the mindset cards integral to the Design for Conservation (D4C) methodology workshops. D4C, a participatory framework, equips individuals to tackle complex environmental challenges through a blend of emotional, spiritual, and scientific perspectives. The illustrations had to visually articulate seven key mindsets: Honest, Positive, Humble, Balanced, Cyclic, Systemic, and Relative. These mindsets are the navigational tools that guide participants to think and act in harmony with natural systems and in sync with D4C’s principles. The challenge was to crystallize these sophisticated and sometimes abstract concepts into accessible and engaging illustrations that could serve as a didactic tool, enhancing the workshop experience and fostering an inclusive space for diverse worldviews.
The Design Response
In crafting the D4C mindset cards, the essence of the method—balancing the complexity of conservation with the simplicity of nature’s principles—became our focal point. Working alongside Dr. Gabriela Baron, each card was envisioned as a gateway into the D4C philosophy, bridging the gap between concept and practice. The design process mirrored D4C’s holistic approach, blending visual elements that resonate on both an intellectual and emotional level with workshop attendees.
These cards are not just visual aids; they’re conversation starters, designed to spark engagement and catalyze a deeper connection with sustainability efforts. The final illustrations emerged as vibrant, thought-provoking pieces, embodying the spirit of D4C and inviting users to embark on a journey of environmental stewardship. Through these cards, the D4C methodology unfolds, inviting workshop participants to explore and embrace a multidimensional approach to conservation.
