Name: Ruby Millard
Degree: Bachelor of Design Innovation in Communication Design, Minor in History
Scholarship and Prizes: 2021 Wellington Tangiwai Scholarship, Included on the Dean’s List for Academic Excellence 2021 and 2022
Project Title: Where have they been? Where are we going?
Description: This project is a visual research interview that utilizes photography and book design to delve into how knowing about our grandparents’ professional lives can influence our own career choices as young adults. The final product is a limited edition of 22 copies of risograph prints, which are all hand-bound.
Course: COMD390 Communication Design Capstone: Plan, Produce, Publish / Whakatinana ā-Wheako Kōrero Hoahoa: Whakamahere, Whakatinana, Whakaputa. In this course students produce a final work to demonstrate the skills and knowledge gained in Communication Design. Students complete a large studio-based project or portfolio demonstrating design mastery. In seminar-style discussions, students develop their own briefs or portfolio goals that address advanced problems or questions in communication design. Projects are published, and engagement with a community beyond the school is a goal of the work in this course.

Description: Mixed Asian stories in New Zealand are presented in zine format through short-form interviews, featuring a blend of illustration and graphic design.

Project Title: Pūriri
Description: A touching comic about the friendship between an Archey’s frog and a Pūriri moth is published in zine format.
Course: COMD335 Comics and Graphic Novels / Pukawaituhi me ngā Pakimaero Waituhi. This course examines formal aspects of comics and graphic novels, their historical development, visual vocabulary, and narrative applications. Readings provide examples of effective graphic storytelling and survey theoretical and practical approaches to the form. Students will develop and complete their own comics.
