The Brief

GALAH Press is one of Australia’s leading regional editorial magazines. Publishing quarterly, its modern cry from the bush springs forth to hero the voices and stories of life beyond the city.

Its amazing founder, Annabelle Hickson, approached our team to upgrade GALAH’s digital presence in a way that both supported a sophisticated subscription model and CMS and seamlessly expressed the print magazine in website form.

The Design Response

Our design response to this project was about invoking the idea that the best storytelling transforms us. So, the entire visual refresh and tech build were crafted to work harmoniously with this kaupapa in a way that felt like a seamless expression from print to online for readers.

We were lucky to work with such an amazing library of stunning editorial photography to bring this vision to life, using it as a base to craft a world of colour, type and subtle animation. The magazine itself often features long-form storytelling, so creating a digital expression that enticed readers into deeper layers of each narrative felt really important.

What you may not see as a front-end user is the hidden complexity of the tech build that lies behind it. This new platform needed a fully integrated Shopify and e-commerce build that enabled a subscription management system and a complex set of user journeys that we refined for a few months to get right.

As well as the site build, we also developed a suite of OOH and social collateral to help promote GALAH’s relaunch to help drive audiences from around Australia to have their stories both read and told — no matter how remote.

Working on such a beautiful project like this was such a fun collision of our tech and design teams. Our months tinkering on this resulted in an end product that not only lives up to the elegance of the magazine but inspires ongoing support for independent journalism. Something we’re really passionate about here at Daylight.
