Under The Hood – September Speakers Announced

3 years ago by

Join us for Under The Hood – September with our two designers as they walk us through how their design projects worked.
Each designer will share the brief, how they approached it, talk us through that internal feedback loop – This is too hard! It’s not working! Why did I decide to be a designer?! – and out to the other side to client love and project success. All of these insights in a quick conversational ten-minute talk with screen sharing.

Steve Horner, Chief Product Officer at RUSH.

Steve
is a designer, leader and product thinker with 15 years of experience in digital across New Zealand, Europe and North America.

Over that time he’s matured from a designer obsessing over the craft of the next beautiful user interaction to a human-centred practitioner seeking to understand people’s needs and frustrations, and aspirations. With this knowledge, he guides teams to create radically useful digital products to deliver customer and business value.

As a product design leader he’s spearheaded strategic product design initiatives for tech startups that top the App Store charts, global software companies that increase enterprise value, and corporate innovation programs that drive competitive advantage.

The last three and a half years have seen Steve build out RUSH’s world-class digital product and design capability; attracting, coaching and retaining some of the best talent in the market to work on big problems for bold clients.

As part of RUSH’s senior leadership team, he strives to lead with clarity and compassion in the modern business environment of volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity.

Steve believes eating plants and dancing to house music may not be enough to save the world, but it’s a great place to start. Get to know him better here.

At this month’s Under the Hood event, Steve will be presenting the Starship Animal Checkups + Magic Forest projects – Starship and ASB asked RUSH to design new ways to enhance the waiting room experience for children, their families and the staff of the emergency department, creating smiles in what is often a distressing situation.

Mark Spurgeon, Owner at Publica Group.

Mark is an accomplished CEO, passionate about telling compelling brand stories and bringing unique ideas to life through creative design and development.
In 2010, he co-founded Publica, a thought-led agency based in Christchurch that delivers thought led design and development solutions for businesses nationwide. As co-founder and managing partner, Mark holds a strategic responsibility for integrating the agency’s services to tackle and solve clients’ most complex problems.
With a strong visionary perspective, he’s earned opportunities to lead long-term client relationships with Mike Pero Real Estate, Canterbury Medical Research Foundation, Rhythm and Alps Music Festival, Trade Aid and much more.
At this month’s Under the Hood event, he’ll be showcasing the spatial design work he and his team worked on for the Matatiki Children & Youth Healthcare Centre for the Canterbury District Health Board (CDHB). He’ll explore how the team took an illustrative approach to help ‘soften’ the hospitalisation experience for CDHB’s younger patients by naming and spatially designing the new children’s’ hospital unit.

Get your tickets below, and thanks to our amazing speakers and DA partners for helping to make this possible.
