New Auckland arts club creates landing place for ideas from overseas

A new speaker series is bringing the ideas, experiences and inspiration of Auckland’s returning travellers into Auckland Central.

Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland

What happens when you come home from travelling, but don’t quite want to leave the energy of being overseas behind?

That’s the idea behind The Departure Lounge, a new show-and-tell-style speaker series launching in Auckland this month. The event will bring together globe-trotters who have returned to Aotearoa to share an idea, learning or experience that inspired them from their travels.

The event is a first from Waitematā Arts Club, a new initiative creating space for the curious to connect through the arts, ideas and conversation.

Organiser Nikki says the concept came from wanting to recreate some of the excitement and openness of exploring somewhere new, right here at home — and from recognising that returning home can sometimes mean leaving behind an international community and sense of possibility.

“I think we can sometimes get a little stuck in our bubble here in Auckland, so far away from other countries, and I’d like to invite some of that energy in,” she says.

“I also think it might be nice for people looking to return home to have somewhere like this they could land. I could have used something like that when I returned to Tāmaki. So it’s a nice kind of exchange — a sort of in-between space between being overseas and being back in day-to-day life here in Tāmaki.”

The event is aimed at anyone who feels internationally minded — whether they have just returned from living overseas, are dreaming about their next adventure, or simply want to connect with other global citizens.

“You don’t necessarily have to be travelling to be inspired by the world.”
