The brief
Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland is one of the most culturally diverse cities in the world. To better engage with the various communities, the New Zealand Police Ethnic Services Team created a special community engagement vehicle to represent over 150 different ethnic communities across Aotearoa New Zealand.
The Design Response
The power of “hello” is universal. So to help police officers start the conversation, we worked in consultation with the various communities and the Commissioner’s Ethnic Focus Forum to design a vehicle that extends a warm welcome to everyone.
To achieve this, the word “hello” was translated to 85 different languages and dialects, hand-drawn and woven together in a traditional battenberg pattern on all sides of the vehicle using the Police colour palette to ensure a double-take moment when people see it out in the community.
