DA Workshop | Design + Purpose | a DIY* manifesto for social change

* design it yourself

“Design, if it is to be ecologically responsible and socially responsive, must be revolutionary and radical”
Victor Papanek, Design for the Real World: Human Ecology and Social Change, 1972.

We designers have power. We have the skills to imagine new solutions, challenge the status quo and change the story. Although the many crises we face right now may feel overwhelming, we can create positive environmental, social, institutional, and economic change in our work.

Just as designers have the power to do good, we can also do harm. To be effective as change-makers, we need to be mindful of the way we exercise our power and equip ourselves with tools and knowledge that will support meaningful change.

This half-day workshop offers a reflective, playful and creative space for designers to explore tools, tactics and frameworks for social change by design. Together we will build a toolkit for design with purpose and create a manifesto for change to guide our future actions.

Whether you want to liberate your inner activist or understand how you can be better at ‘doing good’, this workshop will help you to be more aware of opportunities to make a difference in your design practice.

Working collectively and creatively, participants will:

  • Explore knowledge, tools and mindsets for Design + Sustainability, Diversity and Inclusion, Decolonisation, Participation and Systems Thinking
  • Reflect on power, positionality and purpose
  • Co-create a designer’s manifesto for social change

This workshop is for…

Creatives who are interested in making a greater positive social impact in their work or through their personal projects. This could include graphic designers, UX and UI designers, strategists, illustrators, animators.
