DA Workshop | Design + Purpose | a DIY* manifesto for social change
* design it yourself
“Design, if it is to be ecologically responsible and socially responsive, must be revolutionary and radical”
Victor Papanek, Design for the Real World: Human Ecology and Social Change, 1972.
We designers have power. We have the skills to imagine new solutions, challenge the status quo and change the story. Although the many crises we face right now may feel overwhelming, we can create positive environmental, social, institutional, and economic change in our work.
Just as designers have the power to do good, we can also do harm. To be effective as change-makers, we need to be mindful of the way we exercise our power and equip ourselves with tools and knowledge that will support meaningful change.
This half-day workshop offers a reflective, playful and creative space for designers to explore tools, tactics and frameworks for social change by design. Together we will build a toolkit for design with purpose and create a manifesto for change to guide our future actions.
Whether you want to liberate your inner activist or understand how you can be better at ‘doing good’, this workshop will help you to be more aware of opportunities to make a difference in your design practice.
Working collectively and creatively, participants will:

Meet the Presenters
Anna has explored many paths in her career, but these always seem to lead back to media, storytelling and social impact. She now combines design and storytelling to help changemakers communicate more effectively. When she’s not lost in a good story, Anna is likely to be found drinking coffee, throwing sticks for her shaggy dog or working on her te reo Māori skills.
Zenaida is half Filipina, half Pākehā, and lives in Te Whanganui-a-Tara Wellington. She is a Director and Designer at For Purpose, a campaign and movement building agency and social enterprise. In her role, she partners with communities and socially-led organisations working to create positive social change. Zenaida’s practice combines visual and collaborative design to understand & engage people in issues that matter. She has over 12 years experience in the design field, working alongside organisations like the Human Rights Commission, Te Taura Whiri i te reo Māori Māori Language Commission, Intrepid Travel, Greenpeace and the Greens
