The brief

Sustainable Seas National Science Challenge brings together scientists, social scientists, economists, and experts in Mātauranga Māori and policy from more than 30 organisations nationwide. All share the vision of a healthy marine environment providing value for every New Zealander.

The Challenge has produced more than 100 pieces of world-leading research over a decade, and to continue to empower change, a digital home was needed to make this mahi accessible. This online communication piece needed to share an integrated and enduring vision for improving the health of our oceans.

The Design Response

Our local marine environment is under pressure, facing unprecedented threats from climate change, overfishing, and habitat loss. Our vision was to create a legacy for Sustainable Seas and future-proof its invaluable research. We responded with Tohorā – Aotearoa’s first public AI-powered research tool in the science sector.

To accompany this tool, we created a design world that could communicate the mission of the Challenge. We looked at the special and intrinsic relationship tohorā has in Te Ao Māori. These mighty whales were the guardians and ancestors that guided our tupuna across vast oceans, and now once more, they are navigating us toward stronger marine ecosystems that could positively impact generations to come. Born of this concept, we crafted a distinctive whale tail logo motif.

Throughout tohorā.org.nz, illustrations depicting marine and shore life are brought to life. Animations convey messages such as how people can work together to make marine management decisions. This beautiful storytelling brings emotion to the mission of Sustainable Seas and connects our audience to this invaluable tool.
